JB74 Jimny Supercharger: Unleash the Full Potential of Your Jimny

,

It’s no secret, we love the Suzuki Jimny: An incredible ability to navigate both through off-road terrain and the tightest city streets, retro styling that pays homage to its first coil sprung predecessor—while also including the creature comforts of a much more modern vehicle—and a wide array of aftermarket accessories and upgrades that only comes about when a car creates a community. It is however known in this community that the Jimny does lack one quite important thing.

Power.

It’s not the slowest car on the road but that’s only because its previous model, the JB43 Jimny, is still around. The JB43’s solution however, is simply swapping the motor out for one of a larger capacity which, at the time, came out in various other Suzuki vehicles. The JB74 lacks this luxury of motor swapping.
You can remedy the JB74’s sluggishness with the simple installation of a throttle controller and  sport exhaust system. These upgrades do increase the overall responsiveness of the vehicle, yet there is still much left to be desired; especially when putting additional weight on poor Jim with the likes of bullbars, loaded draws and big wheels.

The solution to this power problem can be solved with one word: Supercharger.
It has been our experience that Harrop’s latest supercharger kit for the JB74 Jimny is the be-all and end-all when it comes to boosting in OE style; no exposed pod filter and no blue silicone intercooler hoses.

Reliable Workhorse yet Lacking Horsepower

This is not the first time Suzuki’s K series has appeared in a Jimny. The turbocharged K6A motor has been in JDM Jimny’s since the 90s. Suzuki however, dropped the K6A from the latest generation, but the K series still lives on through the four-cylinder K15, the power plant of all JB74 models – shame they didn’t turbocharge this one too.

From factory the JB74’s K15B motor produces at the flywheel 75kW power and 130Nm torque. Now, these figures are an improvement over the JB43’s M13A motor, yet in actual fact they’re not that different from Suzuki’s M15A motor and as mentioned before, motor swapping the JB43 is an easy feat.

So while boosting Jimny’s was somewhat a niche before, it definitely has become the way to go for achieving those big power gains — with a whole variety of different kits readily available not long after the new JB74 arrived on the market.

With so many kits to choose from, the question now is; why choose Harrop’s TVS900 over all the others?

The Supercharger Kit – What’s Actually Included?

The Harrop TVS900 supercharger kit isn’t some cobbled together kit to boost your Jimny. Harrop Engineering has been around since the 1960s in the motorsport engineering game right here in Australia.

The supercharger kit was designed to OE standards and is a direct bolt-on replacement for the intake manifold. The kit has also been designed with accessories in mind so that you don’t lose out when wanting to install bullbars and snorkels (favourites of us 4×4 enthusiasts) so that you can have the best of everything.

  • Eaton TVS900 supercharger.
  • Fuel efficiency is kept at low engine loads with an Integrated Bypass Valve.
  • Dual-pass water-to-air intercooler system that does not interfere with bullbars.
  • 2-piece carbon fibre airbox designed for the the factory air filter.
  • 2.5″ inlet pipe for snorkel compatibility.
  • 85mm pulley allows for a peak boost of 9psi

There is no piggy-back chip in this installation. You send Harrop your ECU, they unlock and reflash it, and you’re good to go! Any issues with the kit? No need to worry as it is warranted for 36 months by Harrop.

Supercharged Gains

So what does all of that mean in the end? It means after installation is complete, you can expect to be seeing figures like these on the dyno:

100kW / 149Nm Supercharged measured at the hubs

Which when compared to it figures at stock:

63kW / 107Nm Stock (auto) measured at the hubs

That’s an increase in power over stock by 59% and an increase in torque of 42%
That’s all supercharger: no exhaust, no extractors and no cold air induction. While the dyno figures are impressive — it’s how the supercharged toaster drives. No more putting your foot flat on the throttle to only inch forward, now there’s power right off the mark, even while already rolling on the highway — sure makes those road-train overtakes a whole lot less scary on those single lane roads. You’ll notice the difference from the very first drive – and so will your mates trying to keep up.

Gains with an Exhaust System

If you’ve gotten this far then you may be considering the Supercharger, and if that’s the case we need to tell you a few more numbers. A lot of Jimny-lovers have done mods to their car including exhaust and if you already have an exhaust then you can expect to see numbers looking a little more like this.
